STOP THE REPRESSIVE ACTIONS AT IMF ANNUAL MEETING
Name °ü¸®ÀÚ Date 2018-10-31 Hits 255

STOP THE REPRESSIVE ACTIONS BY INDONESIAN NATIONAL POLICE AGAINST PEACEFUL PROTESTORS AT IMF ANNUAL MEETING IN BALI; A SOLIDARITY STATEMENT BY ASIA TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATION (ATNC) MONITORING NETWORK.

In recent days in Bali, hundreds of people from all over the world ¡©¡© including various international civil society organizations – have been holding events opposing the IMF annual meeting. They have been met with continuous harassment and violent repression by the Indonesian National Police and village paramilitary forces (Pecalang).

The IMF annual meeting itself will host discussions on many issues related to economic growth, infrastructure development, financial crisis, and so forth, with the resultant recommendations and suggestions decided largely without due consideration of the real problems faced by the poor people of the world.

The National Police employed various levels of harassment, dirty tricks, and repression including, inciting thugs to break up mass demonstrations, intimidate activists and peaceful protesters, and pressure hotel owners and rental buildings to cancel activities to be carried out by international civil society. The police also targeted and harassed overseas participants with random passport checks. Meanwhile, the notoriously violent ¡®ethnic police¡¯ (Pecalang) who are thugs for hire beat and bludgeoned protesters.

The ATNC points out that these brutal acts by the national police and paramilitary are blatant violations of the basic rights of assembly and expression, as stipulated in article 28 of the Constitution of Indonesia as well as in articles 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Indonesia is a state party since 2006.

It is clear that this brutality underscores the position of the current regime: no space for critical dialogue. The government wants the elitist and anti-democratic IMF to run its annual meeting without critical dialogue or dissent, merely to portray to the international community that Indonesian people welcome the deceitful agenda of neoliberalism. These actions against peaceful Indonesians and critics from all over the world are clearly sanctioned by the Indonesian government and are a direct insult to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.

This is also an embarrassing misstep from the government which claims that Indonesia is among the top five democratic countries in the world, but in reality, is not a democratic country at all. The Indonesian government should respect the rights of citizens of the world who are currently gathering in Bali to lawfully express their discontent with the IMF and its annual meeting that will impact our future.

Asia Transnational Corporation (ATNC) Monitoring Network is against these arbitrary acts of repression and injustice against freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.

The civil society voices to be heard in Bali is critical in understanding why people resist IMF-WB, as they have been instruments of corporate greed and authoritarian government.

We support the voices of the people who have been unfairly threatened by the Indonesian National Police. We urge the High Commander of the Indonesian National Police and the government to stop these acts and respect the rights of the people who are bravely speaking out against the IMF annual meeting.
